Practical guides

Know what to ask before you buy

These guides explain common insurance concepts. Your final policy schedule and wording remain the authoritative contract.

Choosing a sum insured

A sum insured should reflect the basis required by the policy—often replacement, reinstatement, market value or an agreed benefit. Underinsurance can reduce a property claim even when the loss is partial.

  • Use current, supportable values
  • Include all locations and material assets
  • Review values at renewal and after major purchases

Excesses and deductibles

The excess is the portion of an accepted claim you retain. A higher excess may reduce premium, but it should remain affordable when a loss happens.

  • Check compulsory and voluntary excesses
  • Confirm whether each event or item attracts an excess
  • Compare price only after comparing excesses

Material disclosure

Insurers price and accept risk using the information provided. Disclose facts that could influence acceptance, premium, terms or claim assessment, and ask when unsure.

  • Prior claims and cancellations
  • Use, occupation and security changes
  • Health or financial information where relevant

Preparing for renewal

Renewal is a chance to update values, exposures, beneficiaries, employees, vehicles and risk controls—not merely repeat last year's programme.

  • Start before the expiry date
  • Reconcile schedules and outstanding claims
  • Compare material changes in wording and limits

Reporting a claim

Notify promptly, prevent further loss where safe, preserve evidence and follow the insurer's instructions. Do not dispose of damaged property or admit third-party liability without guidance.

Comparing quotations

The lowest premium is not automatically the best outcome. Compare the insured events, limits, exclusions, excesses, warranties, service arrangements and the insurer behind the terms.

  • Compare on the same exposure data
  • Separate optional extensions
  • Record why the selected option fits
